Spooky Safety Tips for Dry Ice

Handling dry ice can be a fun experience as long as you use these techniques when handling it.

Dry ice can be purchase all year long for a variety of uses, but Halloween is when people seem to order dry ice more often. If you have never used dry ice before or are a returning user, there are some safety facts you should know before handling this cool substance.

Do Not Touch

As amazing as dry ice is to watch sublimate, it is not a good idea to touch dry ice without the help of heavy duty gloves. Dry ice is much colder than regular ice with a temperature of -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit and -78.5 degrees Celsius. You should wear leather or heavy rubber gloves and should make certain it never comes into contact with your skin directly. Injury from dry ice is similar to a burn and will freeze your skin cells.

Think of the Children

Kids are naturally curious. They love to explore new areas and learn by touching. This can be especially dangerous around dry ice. If you plan on using your Dry Ice Corp dry ice at a kid-friendly Halloween party, do not leave the children unsupervised with the dry ice.

Storage

Store your dry ice in an insulated container, like the one it will be shipped in from Dry Ice Corp. The insulation will help to slow down the sublimation process. Unlike other kinds of ice, dry ice isn’t actually made of water. It is a solid form of carbon dioxide sublimates, or changes from solid to gas, when left at room temperature. This substance will not liquefy. Because dry ice changes from a solid to a gas, do not leave your ice in an airtight container because it could explode. It is also not a good idea to put your ice in an unvented room. Carbon dioxide will displace the oxygen in the room and could cause suffocation. Do not store your ice in the freezer. While it would keep your items frozen, it will turn off you’re the thermostat in your refrigerator and freezer, causing malfunctions.

Burn Treatment

If your dry ice is touched by accident or by curiosity, treat your dry ice burn like any other type of burn. Apply antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. If your skin comes off or blisters, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Bandage the skin only if it needs protection.
