How Dry Ice Can Help You With Your Camping Trip

How Dry Ice Can help You With Your Camping Trip

Dry ice is one of the best ways to keep things cold while you travel to your camping site, and once you’re there.

Summer is here, and if you are planning on hitting the road for a fun camping trip with friends, keeping food fresh and cold is a top priority. Instead of relying on heavy, inconvenient ice that never gets the job done, use dry ice! Dry ice is one of the best ways to keep things cold while you travel to your camping site and once you’re there. Here is what you should know about how dry ice can help you with your camping trip.

Camping with Dry Ice

For every 24-hour period that you need to keep food cool, plan on using 10-20 lbs. of dry ice. If you use dry ice in a good quality ice chest, that amount will keep everything inside completely frozen, including ice. Are you bringing camping food like lunchmeat, hot dogs, or eggs to cook for breakfast? Keep non-frozen goods with traditional ice in another cooler.

When you purchase dry ice from Dry Ice Corp, it typically comes in 10 inch square blocks that weigh about 10 lbs. Place one square for every 15 inches of length in your cooler. If you are traveling for longer periods of time, or if it is particularly hot, use 2 blocks for coolers instead.

How Long Will Dry Ice Last?

When camping, dry ice will last until it is completely sublimated. Keep in mind that, for safety reasons, you must keep coolers with dry ice in them slightly cracked or they might explode. The dry ice will be cold enough that outside air won’t ruin the contents inside, but dry ice will melt more quickly as a result.

To get the most out of your dry ice, plan on retrieving it and placing it in the cooler as close to your leaving time for the camping trip as possible. Always pack insulating items, like sleeping bags, around the slightly cracked cooler to keep things cold for the longest amount of time possible.
