The History Of Dry Ice Blasting

Using dry ice to clean is easier than you think!

Dry ice blasting is an innovative way to clean everything from science laboratories to catering facilities. What exactly is dry ice blasting and how did dry ice blast cleaning become so popular?

What Is Dry Ice Blasting?

Dry ice blast cleaning is loved for being incredibly efficient and cost effective. Dry ice blasting uses soft dry ice, blasted at very fast speeds, to clean surfaces. Dry ice blasting is loved for a number of reasons:

  • It is a non-abrasive and non-flammable way to clean up
  • It is environmentally sustainable and responsible
  • It is clean and food-safe
  • It is safe for use in places with electrical or mechanical parts
  • It is able to remove residue from production, release agents, contaminants, oils, biological materials, and paints
  • It is able to do a wide variety of cleaning tasks at different depths

How Did Dry Ice Blast Cleaning Become Popular?

Dry ice itself was developed by Thilorier in 1835 after he recorded the first observation of solid carbon dioxide. He was trying to actually observe liquid carbon dioxide but realized it transitioned straight from solid to gas, thus beginning his curiosity with dry ice. It was used throughout the world in laboratories and science institutes for study, but never really left the science world until the late 1800s.

In 1897, solid carbon dioxide was patented to create soda water that could be combined with whiskey for a fun drink. However, dry ice never worked in that capacity. The commercial use of dry ice and dry ice blast cleaning began in the 1920s thanks to Prest Air Devices. Their carbon dioxide fire extinguisher and other dry ice related products were very popular in their time. Since then, dry ice blast cleaning has been refined and developed into the effective and safe technique it is today. Event stream processing
