Staying Safe this Halloween

Have fun and stay safe this Halloween!

With Halloween coming up and all the festivities happening, it can be pretty easy to throw caution to the wind. This is definitely not advisable especially when the kids are involved. Keeping yourself and the kids safe will help ensure that everyone has a great holiday filled with fun, spooky frights. Here are some tips for staying safe this Halloween.

Trick or Treat Safety Tips

Before you send the kids out in their costumes, remind them that they should not eat any candy in their treat bags until you get a chance to check it out first. You need to make sure all of the candy is in their original and unopened wrappers to ensure they are safe to eat. Check for choking hazards if you have a small child or toddler. Also, send your children out with a light or reflective piece of clothing so that they are easily spotted by drivers on the road when they cross the street. Go over the basics of road safety with them so that they don’t end up running out in the middle of the street, and see to it that they remove any masks before crossing the street so they don’t have impaired vision or hearing.

Staying Safe with Dry Ice

If your decorations this year include any dry ice, you’ll need to make sure that you practice safe handling techniques when using it. Because dry ice is cold enough to cause severe burn damage, never pick it up without wearing thick gloves. Don’t store the dry ice in the freezer or an air-tight container, as the building pressure of carbon dioxide can cause damage or even an explosion. Instead, use an insulated container with the lid cracked open to allow the sublimating fog to flow out. Make sure you only use dry ice in a well-ventilated room, as the buildup of carbon dioxide can be enough to suffocate you . See a doctor right away if you accidentally touch a piece of dry ice and your skin starts to blister.

Staying safe this Halloween is a job for everyone. Go out there and have fun this week!
