How to Use Dry Ice in Spooky Halloween Cocktails

Dry Ice Cocktail

Add some dry ice to your Halloween party cocktails!

When it comes to Halloween, adults know how to have just as much fun as the kids. It is the one day of the year when an adult can live out their childhood fantasy of being Batman or a Disney Princess. So why not make the drinks just as much fun as the costumes at your Halloween party? But how do you get the desired effect? With dry ice!

What is Dry Ice?

Dry ice is a solidified form of carbon dioxide. Its temperature is below -110 degrees Fahrenheit. But when this “ice” is brought up to a higher temperature it creates a chemical reaction where it sublimates. This process is where the solid carbon dioxide changes into a gas without turning into a liquid. When handling this ice, it is extremely important not to touch it as it could cause frostbite and burns to your skin. Once used only for emergencies, this cold chemical is now sold for both commercial and residential uses.

Size Matters

When making your foggy concoction, it is important think about how long you would like your drinks to be foggy. Dry ice is traditionally sold in blocks, so you will need to break it up into small pieces. To break it, you will need a hammer, screwdriver, protective eyewear, tongs, and a set of gloves. Take a towel and put the plastic bag on it. Carefully remove the ice from the bag with the tongs while wearing the gloves. After putting the ice down on the bag, grab the screwdriver and settle it against the ice. Hit the screwdriver with the hammer to break up the ice into small cubes. The ideal size for a cocktail is one-by-one inch. It is a good idea to warn guests not to eat or drink the ice although it will sink to the bottom of the glass.

“Can I Offer You a Drink?”

To make a special Witches Brew, add a half cup of club soda, a quarter cup of lemon flavored run, a tablespoon of grenadine syrup, and some dry ice. For a unique twist on a Martini, add 1.5 oz of Absolute Citron, 0.75 oz of Cointreau, 0.5 oz of white cranberry juice, 0.5 oz of pomegranate syrup, and muddle with two limes.

These cocktails will wow your guests and add another special touch to your Halloween bash. Enjoy the drinks responsibly and have a blast. And remember, you are only a superhero once!
