Celebrate the New Year with Dry Ice

Start off the New Year with the blast of a dry ice rocket!

The New Year is shortly approaching, and not just any new year, but a new decade. We are nearing the 2020s. Even during the 2020s and beyond, we can never have enough when it comes to celebrating the year in exuberance and flair. For an easy and effective way to show off your holiday spirits, kick off this new year with dry ice.

What Is Dry Ice?

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. Through immense pressure, the gas can turn into a snow-like substance and packed into pellets or blocks. It is -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit. Instead of melting like water, though, it sublimates, turning directly back into a gas.

Safety with Dry Ice

Understanding the nature of frozen carbon dioxide is helpful when it comes to handling it. Because it is so cold, it is crucial to keep it from directly contacting your skin. Handle it with thick gloves, tongs, or a towel. Never ingest it. Doing so can lead to fatal burns. If transporting dry ice in a vehicle, keep the windows cracked open to avoid a dangerously high concentration of carbon dioxide. Store the dry ice in an insulated container with room for the gas to escape, lest an explosion occurs.

Make a Dry Ice Rocket

There is, however, a time for carbon dioxide explosions, and that is New Year’s time. Be warned, though, that this is a risky trick that can result in injury, so take care to keep in a well-ventilated place, wear gloves, and even eye protection. Have adult supervision when performing this stunt.

It is all fun and games to enclose an empty water bottle with dry ice and watch it explode from a safe distance, but with a rocket, you want the bottle to shoot into the air rather than everywhere. Take a pull-top plastic water bottle and cut off the cap. Unscrew the pull-top nozzle and fill the bottle with dry ice halfway. Pour in warm water and screw on the nozzle again. Carbon dioxide fog should be shooting out of the small opening on top.

Next, in an open area, put the cap back on the bottle, stand it upside down on a stand (like an empty glass jar), and back away. The bottle will soon shoot up into the air. To make it more festive, infuse the water with glow-in-the-dark food coloring.
