Dry ice is indispensable when camping. Indeed, even when you’re planning to do no-cook camping, you will still need dry ice. It prevents your packed food from spoilage and keeps your drinks refreshingly cool. That being said, there are some dos and don’ts of using dry ice while camping. Before delving into the do’s and don’ts, it is worth noting that dry ice is the frozen/solidified form of carbon dioxide and sublimes to its gaseous form when temperatures rise.

Do Handle Dry Ice Cautiously

Dry ice is safe and straightforward to use but not without the necessary precautions. And as mentioned above, dry ice sublimes to form carbon dioxide gas. In fact, as dry ice sublimes, you will see vapors of carbon dioxide gas. Consequently, be careful not to inhale excessive carbon dioxide because it may cause health problems such as dizziness, nausea, headache, and reduced concentration. Additionally, use insulators when handling dry ice to prevent skin burns.

Don’t Keep In A Stuffy Area

Ensure you store your dry ice in a well-ventilated area. This prevents the build-up of carbon dioxide, which is not healthily beneficial. For instance, ensure that you open the windows or turn on the AC for proper air circulation when in your car. On the same note, do not keep dry ice in airtight coolers and containers as it may explode after sublimation.

Do Store Out Of Reach Of Children

In their innocence, children like to play with anything. Unfortunately, they may harm themselves or spill down your dry ice if they can easily access your stocks. This leaves you with the headache of replenishing or taking the kid to the hospital. To avoid such wastages and accidents, store your dry ice out of reach of children. Additionally, you’ll be able to teach your kids how to handle dry ice if they are old enough.

Don’t Think You Will Find Dry Ice All Over

Have enough stock before setting out for camping because not every retailer stocks dry ice. So this will, fortunately, save you the trouble of going from one retailer to the next looking for dry ice. In addition, having enough stock ensures that your food doesn’t spoil when camping in highly remote areas.
