How Dry Ice Can Help You Out During a Power Outage

In the event of a bad power outage, there are a few ways dry ice can help you keep your food and belongings safe.

With Maryland’s unpredictable weather, you never know when your home’s power could go out. Although not all storms are serious, there is always that concern about your power going out. In the event of a bad power outage that lasts for a long time, here are a few uses of dry ice to help you keep your food and your belongings safe. Read on to learn more!

Lengthy and Long Power Outages

If your power does come back on in a couple of hours, then you won’t have to bust out the dry ice. To save all of the food in both your fridge and freezer, you have to keep the door closed at all costs. But the food that is stored inside your freezer will be just fine. The fuller it is, the better since the frozen food will remain frozen for six to 12 hours, depending on the kind of freezer you own. On a hot summer day, the food in your fridge is a lot more vulnerable to rotting because of the warm weather. Although if you lose power during the winter, your food will not be as affected since your home will be much colder. This is one of the few benefits of the wintertime here on the east coast.

Keeps Your Refrigerator Cold

When you know your power will be out for a very extended period of time, you’ll need a few slabs of dry ice. Every 12 to 24 hour period without power, try placing a ten-pound slab of dry ice on the very bottom of your fridge. Make sure that on the shelf, you lay down a newspaper or some other type of insulating layer between the ice itself and the fridge shelf. Laying that insulating layer will help keep the shelf from cracking entirely. When handling the ice, take proper safety precautions, like wearing gloves while holding it. Also, remember that anything near the dried ice might freeze, and any open cartons of orange juice or milk might become carbonated because of the dry ice emitting out CO2.

Keep Your Freezer Cool

Dry ice can keep everything in your freezer cold for a very long time as well. The amount of dry ice you’ll need will depend a lot on the type of freezer you own. Get in touch with the Dry Ice Corp for any questions about how much dry ice you should purchase in the event of a power outage!
