This is your first time hosting Thanksgiving with your entire family. You have plans to make a giant turkey trimmed with the works of mash potatoes, corn, beets, and stuffing. But what about dessert? Why not make some homemade ice cream to top your oven warmed pie?
Fun for the Entire Family
Kids love to do science experiments and this one can add a fun twist to the regular pie ala mode. Thanksgiving is a time to be with your family and giving thanks for all the wonderful things we have in our lives. We just happen to do these things with tons of food. So why not entertain the kids of the group with making dry ice ice cream?
We All Scream for Ice Cream!
This recipe can be customized based on your flavor profiles but for the base you will need:
- Dry ice
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- 2 cups of half-and-half
- ¾ cup of sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon of salt
- To make vanilla: 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
- To make chocolate: you will need 1 cup of chocolate syrup.
The first thing you will need to do is crush the dry ice. Carefully put the dry ice into a paper bag and use a rolling pin to crush it into small pieces. Make sure no one touches the dry ice and it is completely covered while it is being crushed. Mix all of the ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Pour the dry ice into the bowl a little at a time, mixing between additions. The mixture should begin to harden. Once it is at desired consistency and able to scoop freely, it is time to eat!
This ice cream can be placed on a piece of your favorite pie, eaten with cake, or decorated as a sundae. Let the kids help you make this dish and enjoy the final results!
