How To Safely Serve Punch with Dry Ice Effects
**NEVER ADD DRY ICE DIRECTLY TO YOUR PUNCH/MOCKTAIL, IT IS INEDIBLE AND A HEALTH HAZARD**
A really cool way to elevate the look of any drink is by using dry ice. When combined with water, dry ice creates a very cool fog effect that makes any punch mocktail look like it’s right out of a fancy bar or movie set. Unfortunately, adding dry ice directly to a drink is unsafe for human consumption. But it’s actually easy to get that cool effect with a simple optical illusion! Here’s how to achieve the coolest looking punch you’ve ever seen, just by adding a little dry ice to some water. Just remember to never add dry ice directly to any drink.
First, Get Some Ice!
Suppliers like Dry Ice Corp. sell ice in all sorts of shapes and sizes. What’s recommended for your mocktail party are pellets. For a punch bowl, you might want to invest in a chunk of ice since that will cause an even larger scaled effect for even more wow! However, ice in pellet form will also work.
How to Store in Preparation
Ice stores best in a cold environment, but it is honestly better to purchase the ice very close to when you intend to use it. If you do need to store it before your mocktail party, make sure to keep it in a well-ventilated area. Dry ice actually can give off toxic fumes that can be harmful to your health if in a small and enclosed space. Also, make sure it’s kept in an area away from pets and small children.
How to Make a Dry Ice Punchbowl
Now that all the safety stuff is covered, it’s time to make your chilly punch. Start with two punch or serving bowls, preferably styrofoam or any dry ice-safe product, and place them in a well-ventilated area. Place a larger bowl underneath and fill it with water. Place another smaller bowl inside of it and pour in the punch mocktail into the smaller bowl. Then, add a few pellets or chunks to the larger, water-filled bowl. That way, the illusion of smokey ice will still be there, but you won’t have to worry about the ice evaporating into the punch itself, which is not safe for human consumption.
However, there are still a few more things you should know. First, never drink a beverage or liquid that has come into direct contact with dry ice. As cool as those mocktail glasses look, they are not safe to drink. You do not want to inhale the fumes or consume the ice. But, when handled properly, they are perfect for those social media-ready pics! If you are not going to drink your punch but want to show off the fun, smoky look, place a single pellet inside of a drinking glass in a well-ventilated area, and snap those pictures. After the fumes have subsided, make sure to dispose of the ice mocktail appropriately, and most importantly, do not drink it.
