How to Pack and Ship Dry Ice

If you need to ship dry ice for whatever reason, there are a few things you need to know.

Dry ice is a carbon dioxide form as a solid, below -109 degrees Fahrenheit, and has many different uses. It can be packed and shipped for Halloween parties, food uses, and medical supplies since it does not thaw. If you need to ship this ice for whatever reason, there are a few things you need to know. It could be very dangerous working with this kind of ice if you don’t take the right precautions before shipping away. Here are some pointers on packing and shipping dry ice!

Where Can I Purchase Dry Ice?

Dry ice should be bought on the day that is has to be shipped and packed. Because of this, it is a smart idea to purchase the ice in person. A company like Dry Ice Corp can help you with any of your ice needs!

How Long Will It Last?

Dry ice starts the process of sublimation once it’s temperature climbs above 109 degrees Fahrenheit. Use about five to ten pounds of the ice to keep about 10 to 15 quarts of goods frozen for a 24 hour period. If you’re shipping items for a more extended period, increase the amount of ice used. Additionally, gel packs can extend the life of the ice and keep the overall temperatures below freezing for a bit longer.

How Can I Pack Up the Ice?

Packing dry ice requires a lot of care, or it can become quite dangerous. It has to be correctly ventilated. As carbon dioxide starts to sublimate, it could cause an increase in pressure. An airtight container might cause expansion that leads to a possible explosion. However, the top danger of a sudden release of carbon dioxide is that it can be suffocated within a confined space.

For packing the ice:

  • Make sure to use a foam cooler that’s at least 2 inches thick. This should be shipped inside a cardboard shipping box too.
  • Line up the cooler with a 2 mm thick plastic liner. Once inside, place the the ice blocks under and on the top of the sealed container.
  • Don’t create an airtight seal on any of the packages or containers.
  • On the exterior of the box, note that the package “Contains dry ice.”

Please keep all of these handy tips in mind, and your ice will reach it’s destination still intact and ready for use!
