Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween Safety Tips

Enjoy a safe and happy Halloween!

Halloween is tomorrow and with everything going on in our lives, people can become careless. So before letting your kids go trick-or-treating or setting up your dry ice display, let’s check out some basic Halloween safety tips.

Trick-Or-Treat!

Before sending your children out in their costumes, remind them not to eat any candy until you check their bags. This is important to make sure all of their candy is in its original and unopened wrappers. For little children, make sure to inspect all treats for choking hazards. It is important your children are sent out with some kind of light or reflective object with them. This is to make sure they are able to be seen by drivers when crossing the street. If your children have glow sticks, remind them not to chew on them.  Make sure you go over road safety one more time to ensure they don’t run out in the middle of the street and get hurt. Another road safety tip is to remove their mask when crossing the street. Masks are not comfortable to wear and can hinder your vision and breathing. It is especially important to be safe when crossing the streets on Halloween as black costumes can make children hard to see.

Dry Ice Safety

It is important to handle dry ice with care and caution. Dry ice is extremely cold at -110 degrees Fahrenheit and should never be handled without thick, rubber gloves. If you do not have rubber or leather gloves, use kitchen potholder and tongs to pick up your ice. Touching dry ice without proper protection can cause severe burns. If your skin starts to blister, see your doctor right away as an infection could set in. Before using, do not store dry ice in the freezer or air tight container. Storing it in these places can not only damage your property, but it can cause an explosion. Store your ice in an insulated container with the lid open a bit to let fresh air into it. Dry ice is a solid form of carbon dioxide which can cause poisoning. When handling it, make sure you are in a ventilated room. Breathing in too much carbon dioxide can cause drowsiness, your lips and fingers to change color, nausea, and headache.

Halloween can be a dangerous holiday if you are not taking the proper precautions while celebrating. Remember to be safe and have a happy Halloween!
