Heavy Duty Cleaning with Dry Ice Blasting

Cleaning Graffiti

Dry ice blasting is very effective at cleaning without damaging the underlying surface, unlike less effective chemical solvents.

Dry ice has many fun uses that we’ve elaborated on in previous blogs. Dry ice isn’t all fun and games, however. It has many other uses that are more utilitarian in nature and may even hold the key to unlocking power generation on a future Mars colony. On our own planet, we can also use dry ice as a heavy duty cleaning material. Dry ice blasting is safer than using a sand blaster, water blaster, or chemical cleaners. Here’s how it works.

The Problem with Other Cleaning Solutions

There are many problems with using sand and water for heavy duty cleaning. Sand is a rough material, so while it’s great for cleaning it can also potentially damage the underlying surface. Water is an improvement from sand in this respect since the water pressure can be adjusted to a level where the potential for damage is minimized. But it takes time to dry, and this is a problem for electrical equipment as well as using it for mold removal. And chemical cleaners are awful for the environment, generating hazardous waste in the process.

Dry Ice Blasting is Safe and Effective

Doing heavy duty cleaning with a dry ice blaster uses the power of pressure combined with extremely low temperatures. The very low temperatures cause the material to shrink and lose its adhesion with the underlying surface. The dry ice almost immediately sublimates due to the temperature difference with the surface. So the dry ice blaster does not damage the underlying surface in the way that a sand blaster does. And since the material sublimates almost immediately, electrical equipment can be put back into use right away. Finally, dry ice is simply solid carbon dioxide that becomes a gas – a wholly natural cleaning agent that won’t damage the environment!
