Helpful Tips on Using Dry Ice While Camping

Read on for some tips on using dry ice for a better camping trip.

One of the absolute, hands-down best things about summer is that it is vacation season, which is an excellent time to go out and reconnect with nature. That’s right; it’s camping time! One of the most complex parts about camping for most people is lugging in all their stuff. This is true if you are backpacking or bringing food in a cooler. Any food and drinks you get to your campsite in a cooler must be kept cold. This can be a problem because ice is heavy and leaves behind water when it melts. The perfect solution to this problem is dry ice. Read on for some tips on using dry ice for a better camping trip.

But What Is It?

Before diving into the significant ways, you can use dry ice for camping, let’s refresh our memories. Dry ice is not ice at all. It is the solid form of carbon dioxide, yep that carbon dioxide, and for it to be reliable, it has to be incredibly cold. In fact, dry ice is about -109 degrees Fahrenheit. This is why it is so potentially dangerous – it can cause severe injuries if you touch it with bare skin.

Also, since Co2 is a gas at standard room temperatures, dry ice doesn’t melt – it doesn’t become a liquid before becoming a gas. This process is called sublimation, but you can call it the significant reason your cooler doesn’t fill up with fluid. One thing to remember is that the gas released when CO2 sublimates can essentially cause an explosion if it builds up in a small enclosed space – and it isn’t safe to breathe in high concentrations or enclosed areas.

Great Camping Uses

It is the most obvious use to keep things cool in a cooler, but remember how cold it is? You can also use dry ice to create a camping freezer – this is a fantastic hack for extended trips or if you want to take ice cream with you. If you add dry ice to your cooler with regular ice, the deep cold of the dry ice will maintain the regular ice from even starting to melt for several days.

If fishing is a highlight of your camping trip, dry ice can also be used to flash freeze any fish you catch. Finally, you can also use a small piece of dry ice in a mosquito trap (mosquitos are drawn to the CO2 we exhale).
