The Main Differences Between Dry Ice and Wet Ice
Commercial industries and consumers alike find dry ice to be a magical product. Whether it be fun or for work, dry ice can be used for many different reasons. Wet ice also has its advantages, not requiring handling precautions like it’s dry counterpart. There’s also a big debate about whether dry ice does keep colder than wet ice for much longer. Both dry ice and wet ice have their uses and advantages. Read on to learn about their main differences, their cooling powers, and top uses.
The Main Differences
The difference between the very two types of ice derives from their substance. Dry ice is a solid carbon dioxide. It is usually less than -100 degrees Fahrenheit. Because it’s frozen carbon dioxide, it doesn’t melt but instead sublimates. Sublimation is the transformation of a solid product directly into a gas. One of the top precautions for using dry ice is to give more room for ventilation, as they have needed a spot to go. Make sure to keep dry ice out in a ventilated but insulated container and wear heavy gloves and long sleeves when dealing with it. Wet ice is just frozen water and ranges from 32 degrees Fahrenheit and downward. Ice within the freezer will match the freezer’s temperature, and so might be in the negative degrees. However, ice melts, which leaves a puddle of water inside your cooler after its cooling powers disappear.
Cooling Powers
Wet ice and dry ice might have the same duration of how long they can keep something cool. However, this might be due not to the quality of the ice, but the quantity. Dry ice sublimates five to ten pounds per 24 hours and comes in many forms, including blocks, slabs, and pellets. Wet ice has a shorter shelf life, and it might keep your food fresh for about the same period, but it won’t’ have the same freezing power as dry ice.
Uses
Dry ice is used in many different fields, educational, culinary, commercial, and recreational. Because dry ice is cold, dry ice blasting is an effective cleaning method used in factories and labs. Food shipping is also done with dry ice and bubble making, camping, and more! Wet ice is still great for keeping your beverages cold, calming a sore, and more.
